Nouns and their different types

What is a noun?

The name of a person, place animal or thing is called a noun.

What are the different types of nouns?

The different types of nouns are common nouns, proper nouns and collective nouns.

Common Nouns:

The names that are given to most of the common things around us is called common nouns for example, toy, dog, cat, home, swimming pool etc.

Proper Nouns

The particular name of the person, place or things can be called as proper nouns. The specific names of a person such as Neena, Rahul, Priya so on. The particular place such as New York City, Bangalore, St. Mary's Convent and so on.

Note: Proper nouns always begin with a capital letter

Collective Nouns

The collective nouns are the names of groups of people, animals, birds, or things that are taken together and often spoke as one whole. For example, staff, crew, troupe, flock, herd and so on.

Exercise 3. Collective Nouns

  1. A bundle of sticks

  2. The crew and cast of the movie

  3. The football team of Argentina

  4. An army of soldiers

  5. A pod of Dolphins

  6. A little of puppies in the garden.

Exercise 4: Identify the nouns in the given sentences and group them accordingly.

How can you help your child to understand nouns better?

  1. During simple conversations ask them if the words are proper, collective or common nouns

For example, while they are having food, ask them the food name. Now tell them to categorize it. You can also do this while travelling, singing, dancing and even while having simple conversations.

  1. Develop curiosity in your children. Do not give them direct answers, engage them in conversations which will enable them to ask questions.
